The State of Qatar and UNDP partner to Collaborate on Advancing Digital Innovation for Global Impact
- The State of Qatar and UNDP are committed to advancing digital technology for sustainable development.
- This MoU explores collaboration on mutual interests to harness digital innovation as a development accelerator.
On the sidelines of the 2024 Doha Forum themed “The Innovation Imperative”, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aimed at advancing digital innovation to drive sustainable development.
This partnership recognises the vital role that digital technologies play in fostering inclusive growth, enhancing access to essential services, and empowering communities worldwide.
It underscores a joint commitment to prioritize support for countries most in need, working to pave the way for sustainable development through greater access to digital technologies, and by furthering digital inclusion.
“Qatar recognizes the transformative power of digital technology to create opportunities, enhance inclusion, and drive sustainable development on a global scale. This collaboration with UNDP underscores our commitment to collectively harnessing digital innovation that benefits communities worldwide” said H.E. Mr. Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai, Minister of Communications and Information Technology.
"This agreement reflects a shared determination to bridge the digital divide, foster global partnerships, and ensure that digital transformation serves as a force for equitable growth and progress worldwide” H.E. added.
Building on the successes of the previous Partnership Framework Agreements (2019-2023) between UNDP and the Qatar Fund for Development this collaboration seeks to advance impactful digital and innovation initiatives. With the adoption of the Global Digital Compact and the upcoming 20-year review of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), it will actively position digital transformation as a cornerstone of the United Nations' efforts to address global challenges. Furthermore, it aligns with Qatar's strategic vision outlined in its Digital Agenda and Qatar National Vision 2030, which aim to position the country as a leading hub for digital technology, innovation, and sustainability. Hosting major international events such as the World Summit AI 2024 and Web Summit 2025 reflects Qatar’s commitment to fostering a thriving digital ecosystem that drives economic diversification, knowledge exchange, and sustainable development.
“The digital divide has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges of our time, hindering progress and perpetuating inequalities. Bridging this divide is not just about providing access to technology, it is about empowering individuals and communities with the skills and resources they need to thrive in a digital world," said Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator.
“Digital technology, particularly in the use of artificial intelligence, has emerged as a promising accelerator for development progress. However, greater cooperation through partnerships, such as today’s agreement with the State of Qatar, is essential to scaling solutions that maximize impact. Together, we can create a future where technology serves as a catalyst for equitable growth and development for all” Steiner said.
This partnership will bring together shared expertise and goals to drive digital transformation by building digital capacity, developing innovative solutions, engaging in thought leadership and research to promote effective and responsible use of technology, and prioritizing digital access and literacy, which aims to ensure that the transformative potential of digital technologies benefits everyone, leaving no one behind.
